Foxwoods Conn. 9000 Year Old Village

Taken fron the Sun Journal

"What looks like a simple, small black stain on a sandy hill at the Mashantucket Pequot reservation has changed the way archaeologists in this region look for dig sites. Archaeologists are excavating dozens of pit houses -- structures built into a hill and supported by timbers -- on a hill next to the Great Cedar parking garage behind Foxwoods Resort Casino. The find wouldn't be all that unique, except these houses were built about 8,000 years before researchers thought people settled into semi-permanent structures.

"Usually we see (native people) as wandering around the landscape (9,000 years ago)," said Kevin McBride, director of research at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center. "You don't check hillsides, because who's going to live on a hillside? This is probably the most important site in East North America."

Just this week, the state released information it uncovered more than 8,100 Indian artifacts at a dig on the former Norwich Hospital property in Preston. A $1.6 billion movie studio and theme park is proposed for the site. McBride explained American Indians 9,000 years ago didn't have agriculture, and the running theory was they were nomadic hunters. Evidence at Mashantucket suggests these people used the Great Cedar Swamp's ecosystem to gather roots and tubers as their primary nutrition and lived in the pit houses for months on end.

"We though they were staying in one place for a few days or a week and moving on," McBride said.

Archaeologists didn't have many sites that dated back to 9,000 years ago and thought that meant there were few people living here at the time. Now, they are re-thinking that and looking at other sites to determine who lived here, what they ate and how they lived.

"It was assumed everyone was hunting whitetail deer and turkeys," said Dan Forrest, senior archaeologist at the Public Archaeology Survey Team, which is working at Mashantucket.

Forrest said there is evidence the people who lived in the pit houses didn't live there all year, because they left several tools behind in places they could be found when the people returned. He said the challenge his team is facing now is determining where they went, how long they stayed here and what they did when they went away.

"When they move off this site, it suggests they're doing something different altogether, like fishing," Forrest said.

Forrest said he is looking for links between people from Mashantucket and settlements found in the north, such as Maine. He said making that link could show the Northeast was a more populated and interconnected region than first thought.

"It always looked like New England was not such a great place to live," Forrest said. "Instead of seeing the Northeast as marginal, we're seeing more of a central core here."

Anarchists In Action

Here are a number of different anarchist groups. They show the different projects and actions anarchists are involved in. They represent only a tiny part of the growing world-wide anarchist and libertarian socialist movement.

Quebec Solidaire – The future of social democracy?

Most social democrats these days – well, unless you are Hugo Chavez, are little more than the smiley face of corporate capitalism. Yes, it is good the NDP is against the Gringo's wars, and I will never forget that, but what about some policies that will really help people, rather than nibbling round the edges of the system? But there is one party that does deliver, and that is Quebec Solidaire.

Don't believe me? Look at my summation of a portion of their new 25 point program:

* Support for the social economy, based in part on trade union investment funds, government institutions to buy their products and services.

* Lengthen vacations to 5 weeks and begin debate on shortening the work week.

* Change the sales tax in the direction of a tax on “bads” rather than goods, i.e. tax the ecologically destructive. Less tax on necessities, higher tax on luxuries.

* Nationalize windmill power generation, to be run democratically by the regions and FN peoples. Quebec Hydro to prioritize the needs of ordinary Quebecois.

* Public forests to be run by local non-profit societies. To be managed in an environmental manner and to allow for the maximization of value added production.

* Water to become a permanent “public good”.

* Moratorium on GM food. Support for farmers to change to organic methods.

* A law forbidding the use of abusive law suits by corporations and governments against the public.

* Abolish all anti-trade union laws, encourage unionization of women.

* To support community organizations, to recognize their importance and respect their autonomy.

* The right of self-determination of Aboriginal peoples with the resources to allow them to re-gain their autonomy.

* The election of a constituent assembly which will engage the population in a democratic process of consultation for both the political future of Quebec and the nature of its political institutions. The goal a Quebec Constitution.

*The adoption of certain proportional ballot measures plus guarantee of gender parity and a great involvement of minorities in the political process.

Note that all of these points, either directly or indirectly, are measures that empower the ordinary person.

Pedophilia And Power

In speaking of coercive power, I refer to the ability to force others, with actual or threatened violence, to do your bidding. Excepted are those instances where we use force to prevent an accident or crime – such as restraining a child from running across a busy street, or using a gun to stop a rapist. By coercive power I mean that which is used to dominate and control others for the purposes of exploitation, to impose some ideology or religion, or simply for its own sake.

People who indulge in coercive power, by the very exercise of that power, are treating other people as objects, as things to be manipulated. Other people's essential humanity is disregarded. With coercive power the world is split into two groups, a small minority that rules, and sees itself as superior, and a vast majority that is ruled and is seen by the rulers as inferior. In this manner the stripping away of the majority's human essence is rationalized and an authoritarian hierarchy created. The majority is less human, and thereby the minority can commit atrocities with impunity. Hence, the minority can exterminate entire populations such as Aboriginal peoples, enslave millions of Africans, shove children into factories where they die at an early age, or ship out millions of men to be slaughtered while protecting the rulers stolen empire.

Such manipulativeness and lack of empathy are essential aspects of the sociopathic personality. Now, I am not claiming that all ruling minorities are sociopaths, but in the exercise of their coercive power over others, they are forced to act as though they were. Callousness and arrogance are the natural products of power over others.

The authoritarian hierarchy is not limited to the rulers and the ruled, but is replicated within the elite as well. Not only are the members of the elite alienated from the mass, but they are alienated from each other. A hierarchy of age and gender exists and this is maintained and reproduced by coercion. Elite children often suffer from neglect and other forms of abuse. (1)

We can see how the situation has been set up for pedophilia. Other people are objects to be used, and it really doesn't matter what is done to them, since they aren't really human anyway. The neglect experienced by the elite during childhood only exacerbates this callousness. And as we know the abused in turn often become the abusers.

The person who knew the most about the psychopathology of ruling elites was Sade. He revealed that the powerful derive a distinct pleasure in tormenting the powerless. Sade also claimed that in the same way an addict built up a tolerance for opium, so too the powerful built up a tolerance toward the crimes they committed. In his novels, such as Justine or Juliette, a bishop or banker might start out seducing young women, then tiring of that, proceed to rape, then on to torture and murder. The greatest pleasure of all for the dissolute elite was the rape and/or murder of children!

Thus, the Washington DC pedophile ring, the large numbers of right-wing child molesters, and the cover up of pedophilia among the BC elites comes as little surprise to me. Indeed, given the nature of coercive power, what else could you expect?

But such crimes are not limited to the elite. In an authoritarian society abusive child rearing practices become the norm no matter the class or ethnic group. Working class children grow up to become abusers as well, and some of this abuse will take the form of pedophilia.

Society as a whole is structured along authoritarian lines with a minority in control and a majority that is controlled, whether this is a workplace, a public school, a jail, or borstal or Indian residential school. “Power tends to corrupt, absolute power tends to corrupt absolutely.” Hence, where the power of the authorities is absolute as in a jail, borstal or residential school, a Sadean aspect tends to take over. Where a mix of religious fanaticism, racism and government sponsored genocidal policies are at work as well, as with the Indian residential schools, one should not be surprised that the result was a veritable orgy of child rape, torture and murder. Venezuela’s Experiment in Popular Power

This is a description of the Communal Councils which are being formed throughout Venezuela. It seems to me to be an important development in decentralized direct democracy and something anarchists should be involved in. In my own city there are Neighborhood Associations and in a more militant situation these associations could be the nuclei of such councils. Needless to say, I am a member of my Neighborhood Association.

Could you describe how the Communal Councils work?

There are now 16,000 CCs, established in six months [since the start of the program this year]. It is a very serious initiative, in my opinion... Another very important thing is that the CC has the opportunity to elect a new leadership … The leadership must be elected by a general assembly where anyone can be proposed. The spokespeople are not the assembly — they are not the organisation. The assembly must ratify the proposals — whether from a committee for housing, or a committee for health. If someone who becomes the spokesperson does not have the confidence of the assembly, the CC will not work.

It is a democratic way to renovate the leadership, and permits the assembly to choose a new leadership. I think the law respects this will of the assembly. I was part of the group that oversaw the formation of the CCs. In the law it is very clear: Where is the power? The power is not with the spokespeople — it is with the general assembly. Why are they called “
voceros”? Because they are the voice of the community. If they lose the position of spokesperson, they stop having any power …

I think this is an experimental way of organising popular power. But, for me, it is the future direction we should be taking. This is the basic idea: not from above.

It also depends on the type of problem. There are problems that require the involvement of various CCs, because they are problems of the whole barrio — for example, the water pipes that pass through the whole barrio. This must be resolved at the level of the Barrio Council. The stairs, the lighting, the rubbish — you can resolve these within the CC. These CCs are the base — very democratic; a scheme for participation …

They are looking for ways to prioritise the things the community can resolve: but not to create a kind of “begging” neighbourhood that sees a problem, and just calls on the state to resolve it …

This is how solidarity begins, because you start to see that your problem is wider than your small reality, and you must help others. Thus, the Communal Councils are more of a school for political formation. I think popular power, when it is really democratic, is the best school, because it produces this process.

Carnival Of Anarchy Launched

Our old buddy Eugene Plawiuk has launched a Carnival of Anarchy and invites all anti-authoritarian minded folks to join.

What is a Blog Carnival?

A Blog Carnival is a particular kind of blog community. There are many kinds of blogs, and they contain articles on many kinds of topics. Blog Carnivals typically collect together links pointing to blog articles on a particular topic. A Blog Carnival is like a magazine. It has a title, a topic, editors, contributors, and an audience. Editions of the carnival typically come out on a regular basis (e.g. every monday, or on the first of the month). Each edition is a special blog article that consists of links to all the contributions that have been submitted, often with the editors opinions or remarks. “

FREE THE SAGODA ELEVEN!

(Ripped from Molly's Blog)
On February 11th, 2006 eleven young people from various areas in the Philippines set out for a hiking trip to a well known camping spot in the mountains of northern Luzon, the main island of the Philippines. The young people, ranging in age from 15 to 24, knew each other from involvement in libertarian groups such as Food Not Bombs and Earth First. In other words they were all idealistic young adults with no knowledge of or affinity for "armed struggle" and a certain antipathy to communist sects.

The truck they had hitched a ride with was intercepted by the police. The eleven were assaulted and imprisoned. Hours after their arrest a member of the local paramilitary organization of the Philippine government arrived and "identified" them as members of a guerilla force that had attacked a military outpost on Feb. 10th. The detainees pointed out during their questioning that the group had been in many different locations on that date and only came together on the 11th for their nature trip.

The guerilla group that they were supposedly part of, the New People's Army, is a Maoist terrorist group active in the Philippines. From the Molly point of view two things have to be said. While not being a fan of Maoists I must say that any Maoist group that recruits young "punks" (as the arrested describe themselves) for military attacks is particularily stupid. The converse is that any person with libertarian sympathies who would do Maoist dirty work would also have to be particularily stupid. Given two almost unbelieveable levels of stupidity the truth is likely to be as the detainees say- they are totally innocent and the victim of a mercenary who denounces people for money.

The detainees were subjected to a number of tortures(I'll spare you the details) and forced to signb false confessions. Their whereabouts only became public because one of the prisoners managed to escape for a short period of time, and he alerted others to what had happened.

Many people across the world have rallied to the defence of these young people, especially on last Nov 17th and 20th when actions were hels in numerous countries. The prisoners are, at the latest report, being held in the Benguet Provincial Jail. The detainees would appreciate items such as "punk rock memorabilia" and funds for their legal defense. To find out how to send such items and funds contact Solidarity South Pacific at solidaritysp@lycos.com . Bear in mind that these are political prisoners who may have materials sent to them used against them in their trials. Molly would suggest that you behave like she does in her beliefs that the only way to anarchism is gradual and in her granite hard anti-communism. This is evidence for their defense.

Green Party, Left or Right?

Much time has been spent in the past year or so debating the nature of the Green Party and whether it is “right-wing” or has “moved right” or not. (1) The Green Party of the 1980's was definitely on the left, being composed of ex-NDP people, anarchists and semi-anarchist environmentalists. The GP branch in my town is still like that. While some of the talk about the GP going right may well be motivated by NDP fears of losing votes, I think there is something to the criticism.

The leadership has attempted to sell the party to “small c conservatives” and distance itself from the left. Its economic policies, while not exactly right-wing by todays standards (more centrist, in fact) certainly aren't radical by any means. These policies are green-sounding enough to maintain the party's base, yet not too meaty to scare away conservatives. (But I will be the first to admit, that if the GP's policies were put into practice it would be a big step forward.)

The GP developed a radical critique of the way the environment was being treated. It also moved way to the left of the NDP on political policy, positing a grass-roots, decentralized vision in opposition to the present elective dictatorship that leaves the people voiceless outside of the quadrennial farce. I note that this radical vision does not get the promotion it used to, and seems to be reduced to plumping for a proportional ballot, a progressive demand, for sure, but a long way from direct democracy.

One thing the GP did not develop fully in its early days was a radical economic policy. But this was also the case for the rest of the left at the time, so the GP should not be singled out for blame. Into this vacuum has moved somewhat conservative elements mixing neoliberalism with Green communitarianism. The problem with the economic vision of the mainstream left in the '80s and '90's was being trapped into a false dichotomy, government ownership/control vs. “private” ownership. Since statism was no longer popular for obvious reasons, most mainstream leftists abandoned nationalization, and having nothing to replace it, adopted a modified and supposedly humanized version of neoliberalism.

The mainstream left (and the leadership of the GP) did not realize a third alternative to statism or corporate capitalism existed. This was cooperative socialism, a form of economy that empowers the people and the community rather than the state or corporations. Cooperative socialism emphasizes worker self-management, seeks to replace capitalism with worker or stakeholder cooperatives. It seeks to replace state services with client-run mutual aid societies. This is the new socialism that you see forming in Venezuela, Bolivia, Argentina and with the Zapatistas of Chiapas

I would like to see the Green Party move back to being a party of the left. One way they could do so would be to adopt this new cooperative socialism as economic policy and let the NDP be the smiley face of neoliberalism.

Successful Student Revolt in Serbia

Following on the footsteps of Quebec, France, Greece and Chile, Serbian students have risen up and beaten back government attempts to impose authoritarian neo-liberal policies on them. We are seeing the development of an international student movement rivaling anything that happened in the 1960's. “The revolt was spearheaded by the radical left, which is an alliance of socialists and anarchists.” For more information see,

Dion Wins Liberal Leadership

So Stephane Dion won. Not that it means much from a libertarian socialist viewpoint, but it was nonetheless a good thing that Ignatiev was defeated. An Ignatiev win would have totally Americanized Canadian politics, even far more than it is already. The Liberals would have become the tweedle dum to the Conservatives tweedledumber, neocon light vs. neocon heavy.

Wasted Money

Thanks to Molly's Blog for this info.

Crumbs From The Table of Advertising
(or why you don't want "more gruel please")
A few little factoids:
A. The Trinity. The top three advertisers by
expenditures in the world are 1)Proctor and
Gamble ($7.922 billion), General Motors
($3.918 billion) and Unilever ($3.462 billion).
The list goes on and on through the billions
through to item # 20, GlaxoSmithKline at a
mere $1.303 billion. The additive expenditure
of the top 20 advertisers in the world as of
2004 is $$47.57 billion. This has to be listed
as "found money" in Mollymew's little quest
to eliminate world poverty. Not that it will do
everything, but it will go a good way of the
distance. I expect my Nobel Peace Prize at the
earliest convenience of the Swedish Parliament.
B. The Greatest Sinners. The top advertisers by
country are the USA ($141.0 billion), Japan
($38.0 billion), the UK ($18.4 billion), Germany
($18.3 billion) and France ($11.1 billion). All told
the top national advertising spenders in the top 10
countries spent $270.4 billion in 2004. Once more
"found money" that goes much further towards
establishing economic justice in the world than
even the corporate picture does.
Many sources are available as to the fraction
of this expenditure that would provide for many
of the world's needs today. Anyways, if you want

Operations Gladio And Northwoods

Many people are now aware of the links between
sections of the US government and organized crime,
especially since the Iran Contra episode. Anyone
who reads a history of the CIA or the American
missile program also knows that hundreds of Nazis
were recruited to work for US government agencies.
US involvement in”false flag” operations, COINTELPRO,
and the subversion and overthrow of foreign
governments are not exactly state secrets.
But this list of crimes is not half of it. To get a full
taste of the US government's fascist-criminal-terrorist
alliance one must turn to “Operation Gladio.”
Gladio
was set up by the OSS, predecessor of the CIA after
WW2, as the US feared the possibility of a
Communist-Socialist government in Italy. Gladio
continued to operate all through the '50s, '60s and
'70's and was responsible for most of the spectacular
terrorist attacks in Italy, such as the Milan's Piazza
Fontana bombing (18 dead) and the Bologna Train
Station bombing (12 dead) . As
Operation GLADIO:
The secret U.S. war to subvert Italian democracy
by Arthur E. Rowse, states
Among other things, the U.S. government: forged secret
alliances with the Mafia and right-wing elements of
the Vatican to prevent the left from playing any role
in government; recruited Mussolini's ex-police into
paramilitary bands secretly financed and trained
by the CIA, ostensibly to fight Soviets, but
really to conduct terror attacks blamed on the left;
Employed the gamut of psychological warfare
tactics, including paying millions in slush funds
to political parties, journalists, and other
influential contacts to tilt parliamentary
elections against the left; Created a secret
service and a parallel government structure
linked to the CIA whose ``assets'' attempted
several times to overthrow the elected government;
and targeted Prime Minister Aldo Moro, who was
later kidnapped and murdered under mysterious
circumstances after offering to bring communists
into the Cabinet
.
For the rest of the Gladio story, see .
http://miami.indymedia.org/news/2006/09/5759.php
If Italy's Gladio wasn't enough, it appears there were
similar organizations in other countries.

http://www.copi.com/articles/guyatt/gladio.html

Operation Northwoods
While Gladio shows the length to which the US government
would go in subverting foreign governments and carrying out
terrorist attacks, Northwoods indicates the level to which
they would go on their own soil. Northwoods, was, according
to the Wikipedia article (1) was a 1962 plan to generate
U.S. public support for military action against the
Cuban
government...as part of the U.S. government's
Operation Mongoose anti-Castro initiative.
The plan, which was not implemented, called for
various
false flag actions, including simulated or real
state-sponsored acts of terrorism (such as hijacked planes)
on U.S. and Cuban soil. The plan was proposed by
senior
U.S. Department of Defense leaders, including the
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Lyman Louis Lemnitzer.
Suggested actions included, sinking an American ship,
destroy American aircraft, sink a boat load of Cubans.

The related
Operation Mongoose had as possible tactics
attacks on Trinidad and Jamaica by phony Cuban forces,
and (bribing) one of Castro's subordinate commanders
to initiate an attack on [the US Naval base at] Guantanamo.

And media pundits wonder why so many people are
suspicious of the orthodox versions of what happened
on 911. Who is being naive here?

The Rise of a Libertarian Student Movement

Students in Chile, Quebec and the USA are organizing anarchist or libertarian socialist federations.

* In Chile, the Frente de Estudiantes Libertarios (FEL) http://felvalpo.blogspot.com/ has groups in five major cities. As well as active in the recent student general strike, they have produced some remarkable wall art (see their other website,

http://www.umlemchile.tk/

check out “fotos” ) They also do support work for the Oaxacan struggle. The student strike and the formation of FEL tend to indicate that the social struggle is heating up again in Chile.

* SDS (Students for a Democratic Society) re-formed in January of this year and now has about 200 chapters, making it the largest student radical movement in the US. While not ideologically anarchist, SDS rejects top-down methods and statist politics, favoring student syndicalism. Many of its members are openly anarchists and libertarian socialists. A non-student group called MDS has also been formed as a sister organization, See:

http://www.studentsforademocraticsociety.org/

* SCAN (the Student Community Anarchist Network ) (RAME in French) see

grew out of the 2005 Quebec Student Strike and the collapse of CLAC. (1) It has groups or members in CEGEP's (Community colleges) de Maisonneuve, Sherbrooke, Gérald-Godin, St-Laurent, Vieux Montréal, École des métiers de la construction de Montréal, as well as the three universities UQAM, McGill and Université de Montréal. Money As Debt.

The best explanation of the banking scam I have ever seen has just been produced as a DVD. (1) It is called “Money As Debt.” and is in the form of an animated cartoon. Noted BC folk musician Bob Bossin does the voice over. Most people think that when a bank loans you money they take it from the bank deposits. Not so. Money As Debt shows how the banks create money out of nothing and then charge us interest for it. The DVD also shows how government debt is created and how the growing pile of personal and governmental debt is unsustainable, both financially and ecologically. You can purchase Money As Debt for $26.95 CAD from http://www.moneyasdebt.net/

And Where Is Oaxaca?

Is it me, or has there been a paucity of articles in the mass media on the recent events in Oaxaca? When the story does appear, they tend to “cheer lead the massacre” (1) But I suppose that is to be expected, give what the mass media's real task is in life. I suppose it is also understandable that they would also try to bury this story. The rest of North America is plagued by authoritarian, corrupt governments, peoples needs and wishes are ignored and Aboriginal rights are swept under the carpet. But the people of Oaxaca decided to do something about it – even though they faced death squads, something we don't have to fear...yet. What they did would be a good lesson for the rest of us. What did they do? A general strike of the teachers and allied workers, followed by occupation of the city, take-over of the radio and TV, and then the formation of a parallel government based upon direct (i.e. real) democracy and decentralization. There is a racial element to this too. The communards are mostly “the color of the earth” (i.e. Aboriginal) and the reactionaries are mostly white skinned. Ooo! Definitely, the media bosses don't want us Kay-nuks hearing about this. Imagine if the BC Almost General Strikes of 1983 and 2005 had done something like that... To The Mexican Consulate!

(This is taken from A-infos - http://www.ainfos.ca)

Yesterday, as many who are reading this probably already know, an amazing
companero, journalist, anarchist, freedom fighter, earth firster, musician, and
human being was shot down and killed in cold blood, along with three other
companeros, by officials employed by the Mexican Government. His name was
Bradley Will, and he was shot at the barricades of Santa Lucia, in Oaxaca,
Mexico, as an indymedia reporter telling the story of the amazing resistance
of people of Oaxaca. For over five months residents have occupied the streets
in an attempt to oust the corrupt, brutal governor Ruiz, and achieve the
dignity, freedom, and autonomy initially sought after by the teacher’s
strike which was so brutally repressed by that same governor.

While it is not yet clear which segment of the Mexican government is responsible, it is clear from the many photos taken during the shooting
that the chief of police, another policeman, and important members of PRI
party which supports Ruiz were involved.

To add insult to injury, President Fox is now using the tragedy of
these deaths as an excuse to bring in federal forces, to restore
“lawfulness.” We can only assume, given the student massacre of ’68,
the history of repression of the Zapatistas by Fox’s military, his
recent threats to invade Oaxaca, and the fact that his own government
is instigated in the murders, that Fox means to repress the rebellion.

Days before we US residents may have been watching Oaxaca, waiting
to “see what happens.” No longer shall we wait. We are now a part of
this unfolding history. If the Mexican Army invades Oaxaca, it will
be with the financial and military support of the US government. We
can not let this happen.

On Monday morning, October 30th, Mexican consulates around the US will
attempt to open their doors, to continue business as usual. But they
will not succeed in doing so, because we will be there to stop them.
At every embassy, at every consulate, we will be there, to remember
Brad, to support the teacher’s strike, to fight alongside Oaxacans
in their struggle for self-determination and autonomy from the corrupt
Mexican government. This call to action against consulates is in line
with what companeros from the APPO have already called for earlier this
week before this shooting.

We already know of many groups who are planning for Monday, and every
day following if necessary. Please spread this call to action as wide
as possible. Spread the word: to activists, teachers, students, earth
firsters, latino social services centers, places where day laborers
gather, anti-racist action groups, food not bombs chapters, peace and
justice organizations, Zapatista solidarity groups, anarchist people of
color chapters, people you work with, your neighbors. Copy and paste this
the whole world wide, and do so quickly. And please translate a version of
this to Spanish as well, and spread it around!

A directory of all the locations of all the Mexican consulates in the US
and Canada can be found at:

http://www.mexonline.com/consulate.htm

In memory of my friend, who I know will be with us in spirit,

a friend and companero of Brad, who is sad, angry, and organizing.

The Black Cat Is Awake

This is my translation of "Le reveil des chats noirs" which appeared in the French journal, Politis, 7 avril 2005 http://www.politis.fr/

THE BLACK CAT IS AWAKE

The Confédération nationale du Travail(CNT- F) (1) is undergoing a revival, due in particular to disaffection with the larger union federations. Meet the members of this trade union which stands for self-management and direct action.

A black cat with hair standing on end, back arched as a sign of anger... In the March demonstrations, one saw the famous black and red CNT flag waving. One could also notice the significant number demonstrators in its ranks, in particular young people. A significant revival, which delights the old militants and gives weight to their arguments.

"If nobody works in your place, nobody decides in your place" This slogan summarizes the operation of the CNT-F for Étienne Dechamps, militant since 1968 of the revolutionary trade union. No hierarchy, "each member has the same authority". Self-management and direct democracy are the precepts. The general assembly is sovereign. "It is a form of control of each one for each one, we won't work for the bosses as individuals", stated Fabrice Christmas, regional secretary of d’ÃŽle-de-France. "All is open to debate, including subjects which, perhaps, do not deserve it", analyzes Étienne. Each decision is made by consensus, "And that makes for real militancy! But what can kill the CNT-F, would be to become monolithic "

To adhere to the CNT-F is not to sit around relaxing. Meetings, brain storming sessions, actions, many activities go on outside the work hours. The CNT-F rejects permanent officials, refuses to professionnalize trade unionism and to allow itself to be cut off from the base. Each member adds his contribution. The union helps create militants out of those who are not accustomed to be militant. The CNT-F also helped "to make each individual more autonomous", adds Paco Munoz, pensioner and member for four decades, after a childhood raised in Spanish anarcho-syndicalism: his parents were opponents of Franco. "In the end, it is the improvement of material conditions and ethics, but also to create areas of emancipation"

Paradoxically, a danger for the future of the CNT-F would be to develop too fast. That would complicate its democratic operation. With 4 000 militants, the confederation remains a number of small groups. (2) But it is it less and less so. "The more one is numerous, the more consensus is difficult to reach, the more it is difficult to be democratic, because the number of intermediaries increases", deplores Étienne. However, the CNT-F could attract more and more militants, divorced from the traditional trade-union centrals. "In the ten years to come, there will be a rebirth of class struggle unionism of which the CNT-F could play a part", predicted Emmanuel Coral, 46, ex- CFDT.(3) There are many, like Emmanuel, who criticize "these conglomerates of corrupted notables". The apparatchiks have professionnalised the trade unions and care more about their own situation than their members. When Emmanuel was laid off, he felt abandoned by his union. "I did not interest them anymore because I was no longer working, I was unemployed. The CFDT has little involvement in in the struggles of the unemployed "

The confederal secretary of the CNT-F, Jean-François Grez, felt the same thing in 1988 at the time of the strikes of the postal and telecommunications authorities. Edmond Mayor, secretary-general of CFDT, had treated the members of the CNT-F as a bunch of "black sheep".

Éric Derennes has been with the CNT-F since January 2002. Political militant for a long time, he was close for a while to the CFTC. (4) But, when it came time to join, he felt a hostile environment, little open to new comers: "I had the impression I was disturbing them." All have found with the CNT-F a space of freedom, openness, where militants often meet (because of absence of hierarchy), an antiautoritian sense especially independent of the political parties. The Anarchist Federation tries hard to gather up members from time to time, but the CNT-F is not defined as anarchist. Only revolutionary, but welcome to the libertarians. "They do not constitute a majority", specifies Jean-François Grez, to counter this stereotype of anarchistic trade union which has stuck to the CNT-F for years.

There is much confusion about the history of the CNT-F. Heir of the revolutionary French CGT and the anarcho- syndicalism of the Spanish CNT-FAI at the beginning of the XXe century, the confederation shelters the two tendencies since its creation in 1946. The CNT-F "was used as legal cover for the Spanish organization", explains Étienne Dechamps. (5) However, on the Spanish side, the Iberian Anarchist Federation (FAI) exerted political control of the trade-union organization, and "the Spanish trade unionism thus maintained itself by developing the project of a libertarian communist society", explains the Internet site of the CNT-F. By its radical positions (refusal to be involved in the work's councils, union delegates and coadministration) at the end of the war, the CNT-F fed this anarchistic image.

Late in the 1960s, in spite of some small growth in 1968, the CNT-F came very close to disappearing in 1974. Its existence of little more than groupusculaire also nourishes the stereotype. Its reappearance at the end of 1970 will not put an end to it. More especially another stereotype is associated with anarchistic trade unionism: the CNT-F is seen as violent. The militants, like Étienne Dechamps, are revolted by this generally accepted idea "Where is the violence when 2 000 to 3 000 people die each year at work? "For Éric Derennes," the CNT-F is not violent, it is accused of generating violence because it has other ideas than the large trade-union centrals. The distribution of leaflets, postering can be perceived as violent activities by the other trade unions because it disturbs their inactivity. But that is not a physical violence "It recognizes however, that, during demonstrations, the forces of law and order are fearful. Certain militants play at it in their relationship with the bosses. "In six years with the CNT-F, I never fought anyone, states Fabrice Christmas. But certain employers think that it is necessary to be on guard against us because we are the violent ones. We let them keep this idea ", he continues mischievously. The principle of direct action (occupation of buildings, mass leafletting etc.) asserted by the CNT-F does not embellish this portrait. Work place action is decided by the employees themselves, in a general assembly. The trade union does not impose a policy on them. It ensures only coherence between the actions, without prejudging the form of action "We assert the use of sabotage", Étienne Dechamps, tosses off... (6)

The revival of the confederation has much to do with youth. Since the first university battles in 1986, but especially in 1995 and in the year 2000, many students joined the CNT-F. This encouraged the creation of university sections, the high schools less so. "The existence of a free space, radicalism, its formative role": are possible explanations to these adhesions, according to Étienne Dechamps.

Perhaps also the search for a revolutionary ideal. If the union refuses the adjectives "anarchist" and "violent", the CNT-F asserts that of "revolutionary". Without awaiting the Great Event, the militants speak rather of "transforming the workplace so that everyone can take part, that everyone one is an actor in his-her own life", specifies Fabrice Christmas "the revolution, is not to impose another system, it is to work with all the elements of the group and to make decisions together", theorizes Éric Derennes.

The idea is to make decisions together, but without collaborating with the employers. The CNT-F rejects coadministration and refused for a long time to take part in the union delegate elections. The work's councils are too compromised an institution. Except in exceptional cases, it prefer to remain outside this institution. The debate over works council elections created a scission with the CNT-AIT , an organization much smaller than the CNTF (known as CNT F Vignolles after # 33 rue Vignolles in Paris). (7)

Compromising with employers is the reproach the CNT-F has for the other trade unions, which reject this criticism. No relation is possible with the hierarchies of the large union centers. If there is inter-union activity sometimes, it is with the rank and file. "That happens often with some people", explains Éric Derennes. "But that occurs in the field of action." Except when it is the action of union functionaries. Because the CNT is not recognized by the State in negotiations, like "the great" CFDT, CGT, FO and others. Thus the disputes are permanent. The CNT-F "is very often excluded from the organizing of trade union processions", indicates Étienne Dechamps. In 2001, it had even been prohibited to march on May 1.

1. I write the name as "CNT-F" to distinguish it from the Spanish CNT.

2. There is some question of the actual number. Wikipedia says 1200. I find it very unlikely that this union would lose three quarters of its membership in a year. Revolutionary unions tend to be much looser than regular ones, and there is no automatic dues check-off, so this figure could refer to paid up dues, but not the actual people who are involved in CNT-F activities

3. CFTD is the Socialist Party trade union central

4. CFTC is the Catholic trade union central

5. The Spanish CNT was in exile after Franco's counter-revolution. Several hundred thousand CNT members were murdered by the Francoist fascists.

6. "Sabotage" has an ominous tone in English, being linked to arson, bombing and machine-wrecking. All it means it reality is working slowly or doing poor work, stopping a machine etc, a way of hitting the boss in the pocket book while still on the job. It does not mean violence or destruction.

7. Actually, what happened is a tiny group split off from the CNT-F and also called itself the CNT, but this group probably has no more than 100 members and is just a propaganda group.
